The new GBC 8500HS Cyclone laminating system, together with the company’s High Bonding Strength (HBS) film, which have been introduced at Drupa, were tested in what is claimed to have been the first laminating challenge.

The speed record attempt was staged on GBC’s stand – D05, in hall 11 – at Drupa 2008.

Gareth Deaves, an adjudicator from the Guinness Book of World Records, confirmed the time of the lamination run and presented an award to the GBC team.

GBC said that only the portion of the paper surface covered by the laminating film was measured.

The clock was stopped when the last sheet to complete the 100 square metres left the laminator.

Witnesses and the adjudicator from the Guinness Book of World Records verified that the sheets were properly laminated, without creases or air pockets and that the total laminated surface was at least 100 square metres.

The company added that during the Guinness world record bid, the 8500HS Cyclone demonstrated its consistent adhesion when running at high speeds and its closed-loop water heating system that is said to enable the laminator to maintain a stable operating temperature, even on long runs.

After leaving the laminator, an electronically controlled, motorised de-curling bar removes excess curl in the laminated sheets for consistently flat output.

The 8500HS Cyclone is said by GBC to be designed for single-sided lamination of high-volume print runs.

Running at speeds up to 150 metres (500 feet) per minute, the system can cut production time by one-half or more without sacrificing accuracy, control and quality.

Its 112cm (44-inch) width provides versatility and lets users run landscape prints to further increasing productivity.

An MABEG feeder controls the feeding and transport of printed sheets.

A suction cup configuration allows the MABEG to consistently feed up to 18,000 sheets per hour, it is claimed.

According to GBC, the key to the 8500HS Cyclone’s performance is new technology that improves adhesion at high speeds and then separates each sheet accurately without tearing or slowing the process.

The 8500HS Cyclone is also claimed to provide maximum efficiency and to have quickly configured job settings from feeding through to stacking, including paper movement, sheet overlap, speed, film tension and separation.

Job parameters can also be retained in memory for recurring jobs.

A touch-screen control monitor reports productivity by shift, day and job, including film used and time remaining on the job.

At the system’s separator, a track-mounted snapping assembly remains stationary, whilst running and maintaining its grip over the sheet.

The result is clean, accurate separation and optimal reliability, added the company.
